George VI British Royal Navy Officer's Sword,
Gieves, For Sale
In good condition, the Gieves (Wilkinson) made George VI British
Royal Navy Officer's Sword Surgeon Captain Louis H. Duthie, M.B.,
A post WW2 example, complete with all weather bag (see further
below). Probably the son of Surgeon
Commander F.M. Duthie as both swords came from the same friends
of the doctor (Duthie).
The 31 1/4 inch blade well etched and in good condition saved for
the very tip (has been dropped on its tip at some stage). Blade
firm in the hilt which retains much gilt. The fishskin grip very
good but with some blue tarnish stain leached from the hilt itself;
would probably clean up very well. Twisted grip wires also good,
a lesser strand a little loose, not much. The original sword know
with some fraying and grubbiness, but not too much; overall good.
The leather and brass fittings scabbard good; the top fitting is
loose (glue it on if desired, that is how they fixed it when they
made it). The folding guard section locates onto the securing pin
of the scabbard. The brown all weather bag is aged and the hood
has separated from the main body.
Nice sword with research potential. Well prices at £550.
