An exceptionally fine, well made sword, most likely made in Prussia for a contract arms contract sample submission to Russia. The cow leather grip is so well made with a perfectly grooved spiral for the strong brass twisted grip wire. The forward guard edge shows it is post 1816 (when the French first introduced the design), probably 1820-1830 (the Russians experimented with perhaps hundreds of different design swords from 1817 onwards). The blade marked with tell-tale round poinçons / inspection marks, one clearly a Russian (cyrillic) "f". The spear point blade has been period sharpened, no doubt for testing (as this is not an official pattern) not battle. The hilt bears a worn eagle mark, almost certainly a single headed Prussian eagle used by makers in and around Berlin / Potsdam.

The 37 3/4 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt with the original leather scabbard stop washer in place, though with age; Russian round / disc inspection marks on both sides. The heavy brass hilt is in very good shape. The leather and twisted wire grip is truly superb and the reason we are sure this sword is Prussian made. The bright steel scabbard has a little ding and some age, but is good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
