1780 Pattern British Slotted Hilt Royal Navy
Officer's Sword, Sold
In overall good condition (tip rounded), a rare 1780 Pattern British
Slotted Hilt Royal Navy Officer's Sword.
The tip has been rounded off. The blade is 27 1/2 inches long and
I suspect it was possibly only 28 inches originally (shorter blades
being more appropriate for cramped condition fighting), so not a
major loss; the tip could be repointed if required. These are such
rare swords and would likely still be in use during the Battle
of the Nile and possibly later, perhaps even the Battle of Trafalgar.
The top locket of the scabbard engraved to "Bland St James's",
which dates it from 1768 to 1787.
The 27 1/2 inch blade is in aged though sound condition and firm
in the hilt. The brass hilt with some bending damage but overall
good. The grip and twisted grip wire bindings also good. The leather
and metal fittings scabbard is aged, the leather with cracks, etc.
and the bottom fitting is missing.
Not perfect but good, and exceptionally rare. Our price; £?
