1845P Senior Victorian British Infantry Officer's
Sword, for sale
In good condition, an 1845 pattern Senior Victorian British Infantry
Officer's Sword, dated to 1845-1850, etched to Nicholls & Sons.
Gothic hilt, folding guard, fullered blade = 1845 pattern. Nicholls
& Sons traded until 1850. The brass scabbard shows this sword
was carried by a senior officer; the scabbard is actually quite
unique in that the chape / drag is actually (rusty) steel.
The 32 1/2 inch blade is in good condition with etching clear,
the tiniest tip end is rounded, there is patina / pitting to around
the ricasso / forte era. Blade firm in hilt. The hilt generally
good but with some bending damage to the cross bar (these brass
hilts are so prone to damage; this one is good by comparison with
most). The fishskin grip is mostly very good, some breakage under
the pommel, the twisted grip wire also good (a couple of lesser
strands slightly astray one side). The original sword knot is aged
and grubby and frayed in places but good considering and a real
bonus. The mostly brass scabbard is overall very good. The sword
sheathes and draws loosely, so the internal wooden slats are gone.
A well above average example. Yours for £550. Please quote
