1912P 10th Hodson's Horse Lancers Officer's
Wilkinson Sword, Sold |
In fair to good condition, a rare regimentally etched 1912P Wilkinson
Sword to the 10th
Duke of Cambridge’s Own Lancers (Hodson’s Horse),
the sword of Capt. A R Whistler.
Wilkinson sword serial number 58134 for 1919, this is the post
war sword of Capt. A R Whistler of the 10th Duke of Cambridge’s
Own Lancers (Hodson’s Horse), who saw extensive service in
France / Flanders and the Middle East (including the Capture of
Damascus) and Battle of Megiddo (which saw the Ottoman Syrian forces
totally destroyed) and then the Battle of Palestine. In France,
it is likely Capt (then 2nd Lieutenant or Lieutenant - he made Captain
on 8th August 1918) Whistler saw service as a tank commander, though
in the Middle East Hodson’s Horse were traditionally mounted.
The 34 3/4 inch blade is in good condition, well etched, a little
light rust spots, some patina, firm in the hilt. The bowl guard
hilt has suffered the test of time and humidity, with rust patches,
though would likely make a superb restoration piece / a good candidate
for having the hilt re-plated. The grip is good, but the grip wire
a little loose, especially at one end. The field service scabbard
is in good though aged shape. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A rare regimentally marked sword and to a named officer for only
£600. Please quote item reference O25 (1353). Further / full
sized images available upon request.
