18C North European Brass Hilted Naval Hanger
/ Cutlass, for sale
In good condition, a rare circa mid 18C brass hilted North European
naval hanger / cutlass. Now with 20% discount.
A cutlass / naval hanger as opposed to an infantry / artillery
hanger due to the non-decreasing / horizontal spiral brass grip.
There is the feint remains of a maker's mark to the forte; we can
not find an exact match but several similar (all Germania). This
naval hanger is very similar to ones used by the British circa 1740,
and also shares some characteristics with Russian naval hangers.
It is hard to specifically identify this sword as it is so rare.
The 23 5/8 inch blade is typical length for naval use; it may have
lost its very tip at some stage and been reground to remain in active
service, but the curve suggests the blade would have been no more
than 25 inches originally. Blade has erosion to the forte area but
not to the majority of the blade; this appears to be just that,
erosion, not a repaired blade, though the later is possible and
if so, was period / skillfully done. Blade firm in the hilt. The
brass hilt and grip all good, some wear, some scuffs and other marks.
