1895 Pattern Manton of Calcutta Victorian British Infantry Officer's Swordimage I62 1

Sold Item Notice

This is actually quite a rare sword, a genuine 19C Manton & Co of Calcutta 1895P, made rarer by the fact it has British service "VR" cyphers to the hilt and blade, rather than "VRI" (India service) cyphers; presumably, the original owner was returning to Great Britain after having served in India. In any event, this is a very well made sword and in good condition. This is an 1895 Pattern, NOT the very common 1897 pattern; the sole difference being the later has a turned down inner hilt flap to prevent uniform fraying (many 1895P's were therefore converted to 1897P's by turning the inner hilt guard - this one was not converted).

The 32 3/16 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt, some very slight bending as is normal through use (sheathing and unsheathing). The steel hilt is very good, some aging. The fishskin grip and associated twisted grip wire bindings are good, some wear and tiny surface losses, one or two lesser wire strands a little wayward one side, nothing much to detract or worry about. The steel scabbard is in very good shape, some wear of course. The sword sheathes and draws well.

A great sword for any collection and one that proves Manton & Co were a very high quality manufacturer; yours for just £xxx (1091) . Please quote item reference I62. Further / full sized images available upon request.
