Victorian British Royal Navy Officer's Sword, sold

In good to very good condition, a Victorian British Royal Navy officer's sword and scabbard

You rarely find antique naval swords in such very good condition. This example is marked to sword cutler and renowned military tailors Linney & Co of Regent Street in London, and would therefore pre-date 1886, plus almost certainly have been made from 1884 to 1885.

The 29 1/4 inch blade is well etched and overall in very good condition, some patina spots but not too many, the etching still very clear. Blade firm in the hilt, the hilt with good levels of gilt remaining. The fishskin grip and associated twisted grip wire bindings are also very good; we are not sure if the grip was white fishskin and is now grubby, or black fishskin (for a junior officer) and faded; we suspect / believe the former. The leather and gilt metal fittings scabbard is very good for its age. The locking pin of the top scabbard locket locates well into the hole of the folding guard; the folding guard section working very well. The sword sheathes and draws well.
