1908P WW1 British Cavalry Trooper's Sword, Sold

In overall good though aged condition, a rare early black Gryphonite gripped British WW1 1908P Cavalry trooper's sword, some camouflage paint remaining, a French barn find (a sword that got left behind).

First, this is 100% a British 1908 pattern cavalry sword; the early versions (this one was first dated in 1909) had a black Gryphonite grip; later swords have the much more common brown Dermatine grips. Second, this sword came from a French barn, where is has probably been since it was lost or abandoned during World War One.

The markings to the forte / ricasso have suffered from localized rusting (the forte / ricasso have suffered some light pitting making the markings feint, the top half of the blade just below the forte / ricasso has an even patina, the lower point end half of the blade is mostly very good). However, you can still make out the essentials facts; the sword was made by EFD (Enfield) in 1909, and remarked in 1915. The "X" bend test mark and inspection / acceptance marks are all still visible.

The remains of the khaki camouflage paint still exists on the guard (inside and out) plus the scabbard. The 35 inch blade is still very strong and firm in the hilt. The hilt has a little bending damage where the bowl guard loops back to the pommel, as is very common, but the damage is minimal. The black Gryphonite grip is worn and aged but still very sound. The scabbard has some light pitting here and there but is overall in good and very sound condition. The sword sheathes and draws very well.

The fact this sword was left behind and never decommissioned is a big plus, as it makes the sword so much more evocative. The fact it also has the earlier black grip makes our price an absolute bargain. Please quote item reference number G76 (980). Further / full sized images upon request.
