VGC 1897 pattern ERII British Army Officer's
/ NCO's Sword, sold |
In very good condition, plain bladed 1897P British infantry officer's
/ NCO's sword, hilt cartouche bearing the royal cypher of Queen
Elizabeth 2nd.
The raised guard section near the pommel and 1981 dated Nato part
number marked to the blade shows this to be a Solingen German made
sword for the British Army. The sword is in good condition, though
would require a little effort to bring it up to parade ground condition,
which it could easily be.
The 32 1/4 inch plain, except for the NATO part number, blade is
in very good condition, some slight staining here and there but
nothing a good metal polish and some time and effort could not cure.
There is a little play between the blade and the hilt which probably
is easily cured with some wooden shards (pushed in and unseen between
the blade and hilt), and again the grip is a little loose (the grip
section is actually firm, but the whole section moves a little);
again, this could easily be cured with some good glue put in between
the grip and backstrap (again unseen) and then clamped together
until set. But for most, the movement would probably not be that
much of a deal.
The faux fishskin grip is in good condition, the twisted grip wire
bindings all correct and firm. The sword sheathes and draws very
well, the scabbard holds in place when fully sheathed. The plated
steel scabbard shows some signs of age / wear, but not much; there
is one small kink. Overall, a very good condition sword and at the
right price. Full sized / additional photos available upon request.
