Victorian British Light Cavalry Officers
Mameluke Sabre, For Sale
In very good (hilt repaired) condition, a Victorian British Light
Cavalry Officers Mameluke Sabre.
Well etched along the entire length of each side of the blade,
this Mameluke Sabre was most likely the property of a yeomanry cavalry
officer (the cross guard has a generic / standard pattern not attributable
to a particular regiment), but may possibly have been a regular
officer's dress sword. There is no maker's name to the ricasso /
forte as far as we can see (it is mostly hidden by the langets),
which simply likely means it was sold by a retailer (such as a tailor
/ outfitter) who did not want to pay extra for their name to be
The 30 1/2 inch blade is in very good condition, the superb etching
still very clear, some age / scuffing / staining but not very much.
Blade firm in hilt. The hilt itself is good, but the ivory grip
sections have age and repairs, plus 3 of the 4 original rosettes
and the knot ring are missing. The brass scabbard is good but with
some dings, probably from being worn in the saddle. The sword sheathes
and draws well except for the last 1mm.
A lovely sword and scarce. This is a good price: £1000. Please
