Circa 1785 British Light Cavalry Officer's
Sword, For Sale
In good condition, a circa 1785 British Light Cavalry Officer's
An interesting sword in that it clearly has a late 18C British
hilt / grip, but the blade, possibly older, is only 29 5/8 inches,
so this sword probably was never intended as anything other than
a dress sword. Date wise, we see similar grips around 1790, but
on the basis the blade may not have come from an earlier sword,
we have dated it to circa 1785. It should be noted that British
army sword patterns were unofficial until the end of the 18C, when
they started to be regulated.
The scarce swollen (no fullered) 29 5/8 inch blade has a steady
patina, is in good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt also
very good, gain with patina. The fluted ebonized grip is very good
but has two small chips missing under the pommel.
A rare example in good order, a real bargain at only £500.
