Edward VII Northumberland Fusiliers Wilkinson
Sword, for sale
In good overall condition, the Edward VII Northumberland Fusiliers
sword of Capt. Lionel Edward Ottley.
Wilkinson Sword serial number 42672 for 1910, this sword has a
period metal tag inscribed to Capt L E Ottley, Northumberland Fusiliers,
which shows he kept the same sword for some time / into WW1. After
WW1, Colonel Lionel Edward Ottley worked for the Foreign Office
in Paris, where he fell fatally ill in August 1921 (it appears he
died of a burst appendix - obituary further below). The blade inscribed
"Presented to Gentleman Cadet Lionel Edward Ottley for Exemplary
Conduct whilst at that institution". We understand he had a
distinguished military career during WW1 and was once a Supreme
War Council expert (based in Poland).
The 32 1/8 inch blade is worn with patina, etc. and firm in the
hilt. The plated hilt has suffered from plating loss and patina,
as has the scabbard. The fishskin grip and associated twisted grip
wire bindings are in good order. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Plenty of research to be done on Lionel Edward Ottley. A rare sword
and with great provenance, yours for £800. Please quote item
reference AC18. Further / full sized images available upon request.
