1821 Patt British Heavy Cavalry Officer's
Wilkinson Sword, Sold
In good condition, a 1821 Patt British Heavy Cavalry Officer's
Wilkinson Sword. This is the sword of Col. G. W. Hobson of the 12th
Serial number 31625 for 1892. Original owners initials "GWH"
for G W Hobson etched to blade. Wilkinson sales ledger confirms
G W Hobson of the 12th Lancers bought this for himself (while a
Lieutenant). He served in both the Boer War (this sword undoubtedly
was with him) and World War One. He is the author of "The Story
of the XII Royal Lancers from 1715 to 1918. 315 pp."
The 34 3/4 inch blade is well etched and in overall good condition;
there are some nicks to the cutting edge and a small amount of patina
near the tip. Blade firm in the hilt. The steel hilt generally very
good though worn. The fishskin grip worn but sound; the associated
grip wire bindings also good. The steel scabbard is overall good,
but with some light rust and throat section / tightening screws
missing. The sword sheathes and draws well. The nicks and well worn
fishskin grip more than imply the sword was held and used a lot.
A very evocative and well above average example. Yours for £?
