1821 Pattern Late Victorian British Light
Cavalry Officer's Sword (sold) |
A very good late Victorian British light cavalry officer's sword,
possibly Royal Horse Artillery.
Marked at the ricasso "J Wood Plumstead", this is either
the original owner's name or an obscure outfitter who had their
name placed there. In any event, this is a lovely late Victorian
1821P light cavalry officer's sword etched with lances, a rampant
horse and a field artillery canon, so it may well have been owned
by an officer in the Royal Horse Artillery.
The 32 1/2 inch blade is in very good order with some minor early
rust spots, nothing much, and is firm in the hilt. The steel hilt
like the steel scabbard has endured some light rust pitting but
the patination is very even and pleasing; this is something I would
leave as is, truly. The sabre sheathes and draws very well. The
fishskin grip and its twisted wire ring bindings are ion very good
shape. A well above average example.
