Sold Item Notice

I guarantee this to be an authentic French An XIII Cuirassier sabre; it has been re-griped in quality leather. Bought by me from a private seller in the UK in 2010, it was originally bought from an antiques shop in the UK 22 years before. The blade is marked to Klingenthal in April 1815, just before Waterloo. With no markings (the French marked and critically remarked their swords with datable markings) to date it past Waterloo, this sabre was clearly a battlefield pickup brought back to Britain by one of the victors.

Please note: The inspection stamps / poinçons on the blade are correct for the blade spine's date of April 1815; French Poinçons - B (star) for Borson, B (chained) for Bick and L for Lobstein.

Poincons

The blade is the modified spear point type that many if not most of the blades were reground to just before Waterloo to make them more effective at piercing an enemy's armour. The 95 cm blade is in generally very good order though the tip area is a little rusted. Blade firm in the hilt. The grip has been replaced with quality (cow) leather so it should last a very long time; the ring bindings (twisted grip wire) is recent as well of course. The scabbard is 100% authentic also but has been refinished at some stage; the number 1528 still visible on the upper suspension ring holder and G945 on the scabbard drag / shoe; it should be possible to strip this down to the original metal (the scabbard is very sound and there is no sign of pitting, etc.) but sometimes these things are best left alone. Further / full sized images available upon request. Item reference number 511.
