Early 1900's Experimental Cavalry Wilkinson Sword

One of the rare experimental swords made by Wilkinson while the British tried to find a replacement for the highly derided 1899P. This one was put into service with the 33rd Queen Victoria's Own Light Cavalry (in the photo you will see the Corporal of the 3 cavalrymen who wears the uniform of the 33rd holding this model of sword).

The 34 1/2 inch curved special point Wilkinson stamped blade is in very good condition except for some patina / light pitting two thirds the way down. The blade has been period sharpened and is firm in the hilt. The hilt in good condition, marked "33.L.C 125" (weapon number 125 of the 33rd light cavalry). The leather field service scabbard in aged and a little worn but overall good condition. The sword sheathes and draws well.

Clearly, this pattern of experimental sword never made it as an official pattern for the British Army, as the 1908 pattern was eventually the 1899P's replacement. But I have o say, I like this sword a lot and would probably take it over the 1908P any day, if only for the lighter scabbard and ability to use it as a slashing, as well as thrusting weapon. I like it! And I think others would too.

Not many of these around! Grab it quick; £650. Please quote item reference Q08. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 0315-1.18 (2.42).
