1821P Victorian British Royal Artillery Officer's
Sword by Pillin, Sold
|
In very good condition, a quality Pillin made 1821 pattern British
Royal Artillery officer's sword with family crest and officer's
initials etched to the blade.
Marked to quality maker "Pillin Manufacturer Gerrard St Soho
London" to the ricasso, the blade also bearing an etched family
crest of a heron / crane or similar holding a cross with the inscription
/ motto "Victorian adepti sumus", plus the original officer
owner's initials, "E C". So, if you are a budding researcher,
you could well determine who originally owned this sword.
The 33 7/8 inch blade is very well etched, with the etching still
very clear, almost as new. The blade has a single nick to the cutting
edge, some minor scuffing and a little patina, but not much, and
is firm in the hilt. The hilt and scabbard were once later painted
gilt (yuck) but most of this has now been removed (tiny amounts
remain, which will come off); this has actually protected the sword
against the ravages of time and damp, so no bad thing. The grip
shows sign of wear; it seems clear this sword was worn and held
by the owner more than once or twice. The twisted grip wire is good,
one lesser strand is slightly astray. The steel scabbard is in good
condition overall, some light rust pitting but not much, a small
ding. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A superb well above average example, especially so the blade, and
yours for only £XXX. Please quote item reference number L69
(1227). Further / large images available upon request.
