1827P Victorian Rifle Brigade VIP Boer War
Officer's Sword, sold |
In very good condition, a no-nonsense Wilkinson made rifle brigade
officer's sword, made for battle and one of the Boer War's top British
officers, Charles Hawtrey Bruce Norcott CMG.
The blade says it all, no decoration other than the original owner's
initials, CHBN, his family crest, "Rifle Brigade" and
the Wilkinson logo. This robust sword, serial number 21781 for 1867,
was sold to then Ensign Charles Hawtrey Bruce Norcott. It is believed
this sword possibly stayed with this officer throughout his career
until his promotion to Major-General during the Boer War, which
would mean this sword was with then Colonel Norcott when he commanded
the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade during the Relief of Ladysmith.
The 33 inch blade is in very good condition, some ageing in places,
having been sharpened at least once; it is a true fighting blade.
The blade is firm in the hilt which is equally very good order,
the fishskin grip with typical single strand twisted grip wire for
heavy use are also both good. The leather and steel fittings scabbard
is in very good shape, the sword knot which may or may not be original,
is also very good. The sword sheathes and draws very well.
A well above average example from a very important officer, and
thus is under-priced. Further / full sized pictures available upon
request. Please quote item reference number D25 (703)
