Victorian British Infantry General Officer's
Mameluke Sabre, Sold |
In good to very condition, a Victorian British Infantry General
Officer's Mameluke Sabre by Thurkle.
This example has a steel scabbard, for a junior general officer,
a Major General or 2 Star General or slightly above. Steel as opposed
to brass for senior (staff) generals as the implication is that
lower ranking generals would be involved in field duties, which
also means they tend to be in less pristine condition due to wear.
The 32 5/8 inch blade is in very good condition with just a couple
of very small patina spots, and is firm in the hilt. The hilt with
wear / age damage to the ivory grip sections; age cracking and a
small section missing on the pommel turn (it is possible to make
your own ivory repair paste as home - details gladly given to any
buyer). The steel scabbard with some age; small splotches around
the suspension rings mostly which again indicates harsher wear conditions
than a senior general's sword would endure. The sword sheathes and
draws well.
A lovely example of this iconic sabre. Nicely priced at £(too
late, now sold). Please quote item reference AC66 (0326). Further
/ full sized pictures available upon request.
