Trafalgar Era British Royal Navy Senior /
Flag Officer's Sword, for sale
In sound condition, a very rare and unusual Trafalgar Era British
Royal Navy Senior / Flag Officer's sword.
What makes this senior Royal Navy officer's unusual is that it
has a plain fighting blade and light weight blue and gilt etched
scabbard. Generally referred to as the 1805 Pattern, stirrup hilted
lions head officers swords were in use prior to 1805, and the non-regulation
scabbard indicates this is one of them, so circa 1803, prior to
the Battle of Trafalgar. The girthy high grade ivory grip and clearly
once magnificent scabbard, together with a fighting blade indicates
this was a very senior / flag officer's sword, one that served en
board His Majesty King George IV's vessels, not behind an Admiralty
desk. The 28 5/8 inch blade is clearly for active / battle use (longer
blades tend to be dress swords as shorter blades were more practical
in the confined deck areas of sailing ships.
Blade still very sharp and in good condition. A little movement
in the hilt. Hilt brown from patina / tarnish of the brass. Ivory
grip generally very good with very little age cracking but with
loss under the pommel. Twisted grip wire bindings very good. The
scabbard with remnants of blue and gilt etching, mostly gone and
the base steel with light pitting, but is still remarkably sound.
The sword sheathes and draws well enough but loosely.
We doubt you will find another, especially with such a bespoke
scabbard. Who knows where this sword has been on its travels. Surely,
a great investment for only £1000. Please quote item reference
number AC06. Further / full sized pictures available upon request.
