Klingenthal Waterloo An XIII French Cuirassier Sword, dated August 1811

Sales enquiries

An iconic French heavy cavalry sword, clearly a Battle of Waterloo battlefield pick up due to a) mismatched hilt (1068) and scabbard (1102) rack / weapon numbers (shows the sword and its scabbard were separated, and married to a suitable also orphaned scabbard), b) no post-1815 inspection marks, c) spear pointed blade. Guaranteed authentic, the poinçons and date inscription to the blade's spine are correct.

The 37 1/2 inch blade is in very good condition, with a few patina spots (not many) and some period sharpening marks still visible. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt overall very good, but the ferrule (brass band around section of grip where it meets the inside of the hilt / guard) has split (previous glue repair showing); could be welded together. The grip is aged and with some loss / damage, but overall good and original leather. The twisted grip wire bindings, possibly a later replacement, good but not 100% tight. The steel scabbard has been over "cleaned" in more recent years removing the original Napoleonic chemical browning, but otherwise is good. The sword sheathes and draws well. If you repaired the ferule and gave the scabbard a little age, this would be one great example.

These almighty and great Napoleonic swords are appreciating value and at £1500, this one is well below market price. Please quote item reference AB64. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 0121-1.18 (3.326)
