Victorian British RN Claymore Blade Sword of later Admiral / Sir S C J Colville

Sales enquiries

Admiral The Honourable Sir Stanley Cecil James Colville was one of Britain's most senior naval officers who purchased this sword in 1885 when he was still a lieutenant. The blade bears his initials (S C C) and the crest with motto "oublier ne puis" of his father, Charles John Colville, 1st Viscount Colville of Culross. Family details are here.

The 31 1/2 Inch blade, Wilkinson serial number 26716 for 1885 (receipt below confirms sale was to the Honourable Stanley Colville), is in overall good condition, the etching still clear, the blade is firm in the hilt. The solid (no folding section) guard / hilt with locking pin gap under the langet section, is good and solid; it appears to have been browned (camouflage). The black is wearing out on the fishskin, but the high quality fishskin is very good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The leather and gilt metal scabbard is good, one fold starting, aged, with strong catch which locates as it should into the hilt. The sword sheathes and draws very well.

A superb high quality sword made for an exceptionally important RN officer. Nothing but investment here folks at just £2250. Please quote item reference AB10. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 0094-1m (2.129).
